To change the proportions of an object you can make it larger or smaller freely. To change the size of an object while maintaining its shape you have to select it first, then drag a handle to scale. You can scale horizontally, vertically, or both horizontally and vertically.

With the crop tool you can cut off the sides of an image to make it the proper size or to remove unwanted parts.

To transform a layer, make the layer active, and select it. To transform multiple layers, group the layers together or select multiple layers by Shift-clicking more than one layer. The background layer is the bottommost layer in the Layers palette. After right click on an image, select the Set as background command and the entire image will be placed on the Background layer.

When you have finalized the content of layers, you can merge them for easier transform. To merge, select multiple layers by Shift-clicking more than one layer and group them together.
